Université Paris Diderot, also known as Paris 7 is one of the heirs of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Paris (together with Paris 6), which, founded in the mid-12th century, was one of the earliest universities established in Europe. Featuring two Nobel Prize laureates, two Fields Medal winners and two former French Ministers of Education among its faculty or former faculty, the university is famous for its teaching in science, especially in mathematics. The university also hosts many others disciplines: currently, there are 2300 educators and researchers, 1100 administrative personnel and 26,000 students studying humanities, science, and medicine. In 2012, the university completed its move in its new ultra-modern campus in the Paris Rive Gauche neighborhood.

The Use of Virtual Environments as Extended Classrooms

A concept that is deeply studied at present by the philosophers of science and technology is the “extended mind” (Clark and Chalmers, 1998). The thesis of the extended mind (also called “extended cognition”) is that some mental processes occur outside the brain (and outside the body) of the biological subject that triggers them. This view of the mind implies that cognitive processes would be strongly conditioned by the natural, technological and social environment (Hutchins, 1995). According to this perspective, we should talk about “cognitive systems” rather than “cognitive subjects” (Clark, 2008). Therefore, if we consider virtual learning environments as extended classrooms, we must analyze their impact on teachers and students as distributed and strongly interconnected and interdependent cognitive systems.

Nowadays, technology is more than a toolbox of artefacts that are used as partial solutions to particular problems. It constitutes a virtual environment with information, tools and social structures for every task related to the production and communication of knowledge. Therefore, we need to understand the virtual environment where our educational tasks are deployed, and we need to teach about the skills and competences about technology in order to take advantage of that rich educational environment. If both approaches are blended, educational virtual environments extend the range of teaching activities, opening up our classroom and enriching to a broad range the kind of strategies that we can consider as educational strategies. When and how can we use those extended classrooms and educational strategies, is a matter of good researching activities.

In this edition of the Congress, we will embrace this new field of study to fully understand how technologies are being used as an extension of our teaching possibilities. Thus, scholars and practitioners alike are welcome to present how they are using virtual environments to extend the traditional boundaries of educational activities and the cognitive processes we deploy in learning activities.

Prof. Olufemi Isiaq, PhD – Solent University (United Kingdom)

Technology and its role in Learning and Teaching

Prof. Isiaq career started in the business industry, working for multinational companies including Eon UK and Siemens Enterprise and Communication Limited. As a software engineer at Siemens Enterprise communication, he had the opportunity to work on various clients’ project including software systems for companies such as Rolls Royce etc. At one point he decided to move to the academic area and began teaching at Trent International College, becoming a keynote speaker at Nottingham Trent University. Currently, as a professor at Southampton Solent University, research interest and work have been in the area of Decision Support Systems and its technological application for mental health alleviation, Educational support and intervention and Business Processes improvement.

Virtual Education: Empowering learners with avatars

MariCarmen is an innovative and versatile academic with 22 years’ experience in UK Higher Education. With a background in Applied Linguistics and Modern Languages, from early on in her career, she developed a strong interest and expertise in digital pedagogy and technology enhanced learning. MariCarmen is committed to making education inclusive for all, in both its design and delivery. Currently, she works as an instructional designer, lecturer and PhD supervisor for the Universities of the West of England, Essex and UNICAF. For the last decade she has been examining the use of virtual world environments and virtual reality technologies for teaching and learning. She designs unique learning experiences and innovative solutions to some of the challenges encountered in traditional educational practices. Her recent book, Virtual Worlds: Concepts, applications and future directions, co-edited with Professor Falconer, makes a strong contribution to the field of virtual education.

Multimodal representational systems. Cognitives basis for the design of digital learning tools and resources

Doctor in Philosophy and Cognitive Sciences by the UNED. He is currently a High Qualification Professor at the Salomé Ureña Higher Teacher Training Institute of the Dominican Republic and a collaborating professor at UNED, Spain. His research and publications cover various philosophical and cognitive issues on education and outreach in science and technology and on innovation and the social appropriation of knowledge. With more than fifteen years of experience in distance education, he has given numerous training courses for postgraduate faculty as a specialist in the development of educational innovation activities. He has extensive experience in software design and software applications and is responsible for software development for functional and cultural diversity built into the HELIOX OS operating system (www.proyectoheliox.org).

Prof. Myint Swe Khine, PhD – Emirates College for Advanced Education (United Arab Emirates)

Technology and Innovation in Virtual Learning Environments

Dr. Myint Swe Khine is a Professor at the Emirates College for Advanced Education, United Arab Emirates. He has taught at leading universities throughout Asia including Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and Curtin University in Australia. He holds Master’s degrees from the University of Southern California, USA, and University of Surrey, UK and a Doctorate in Education from Curtin University in Australia. He publishes widely in international refereed journals and edited several books. His latest book Computational Thinking in STEM Disciplines: Foundations and Research Highlights (2018), is published by Springer in Switzerland.
